Do I want a Porsche 944 or do I want an old Mustang?!?

Kinja'd!!!

I'm going insane on this subject right now! Ever since the debacle with the 911 going haywire and my dad using the hateful sentence, "It's my car!"(As true as that may be, it still hurts. :( ) I've been searching Craigslist all around me for a classic car to call my own, and the ones that keep going on and off in my mind are 944, and Mustang. Which one do I want? I Don't know! There's so many to choose from. The fact that I can tell my dad that "This Porsche is MINE!" is just so EVIL, but the sound of 'Murican V8 with CAMSSS, is soo tempting; I could be that one person in the family that takes the 'Murican route just once. I think I've spent 30 hours on Craigslist in the past week looking non-stop. Help me Oppo, please! :(

I wish I knew! :(

I'd love any 944, as long as it's not a 944S, S2 or 951.

I'd love any Mustang from '64-91 that has a V8 and a manual, I can't choose and there aren't enough cars local to me that fit the bill of ready to be driven away or for $2000 and below. :(

What's the main purpose of your vehicle? Do you need it to be dependable, run like a clock, and be easy to work on and afford repairs? Or will you have time to tinker, work, and DIY repairs? The Porsche is a handler but I don't know how big the customization market is, the Mustang can be a jack-of-all-trades performer with an enormous aftermarket support. Oh, and does your area have lots of fun, curvy roads or dead-straight highways and field roads?

The purpose would for it to be a summer-only car, even as a summer-daily! definitely easy to work on and repair in a small garage with some minimal experience and affordable. My area is shitty imperfect roads with plenty of curves when I start to move out from my area with some hills here and there and maybe some backroads if I can find any. but mostly city/suburban/highway locally.

Old Mustang, parts are plentiful and are being remade. You can also set up a Mustang to easily out drive a 944, (won't take much, 944's are slower than Pintos).

I think the Mustang would be the safer bet of owning between the two provided the previous owner has been kind. Mustang parts are likely easier to source new or from junkyards, and they're pretty much blank canvas for whatever routes you wish to take it. Porsche parts might be tougher to find and you might be dealing headache-causing stereotypical German over-engineering. Mustangs can be fun on curvy roads with a few suspension mods, especially the Fox-bodies, and still soak up crappy road surfaces. Just don't buy a V6 Mustang and strap a supercharger to it, I'm speaking from experience when I say it's a bad, bad, bad idea.

It's an unreliable Frankenstein of a motor. The iron block's been punched out from 3.8 to over 4 liters, forged pistons and rods, a really too-aggressive cam, and a SVT Cobra supercharger adapted to fit on top. It's come close the annihilating the stock V6 automatic transmission, it took a built t-5 to keep it together. It needs water-injection to keep intake and engine temperatures down. Oh, and the amount of money spent on this project has netted about 350whp could have been used to buy AND build a V8 that would make the same or more horsepower with more reliability.

Here is a list of things I will do if you don't get a Porsche.

1 I will make it my goal in life that no girl ever has sex with you this includes killing the girls that will and cutting off your dick.

2 I will make sure no girl ever loves you. And if one does I will kill them in front of you.

3 I think the 911 is lonely and needs another Porsche friend.

4 As previously mentioned I will cut off your dick peel off your first layer of skin light you on fire and pour lighter fluid on thee fire turn on a grinding wheel and shove you into it repeatedly the I will take a bleach and lemon juice mixture dump it on your wounds cut off your limbs and dump you in the desert to die....I am not bluffing.

5 The Porsche gets better MPG.

6 You can say that you have a Porsche that is all your own.

I had the same problem when shopping for my car. Do I want old American v8 power or a 944? I chose the old American (1960-1980) option because parts are generally cheap and easy to find. The cars are also in general stupid easy to repair. Compared to the 944 that while crazy fun, parts are harder to find and more expensive to buy. The car is also harder to work on than an older American car, a 944 is so much smaller and more modern.

Be honest with yourself though, you won't be able to afford a '69 fastback (or any fastback) in your price range. You will probably have to settle for a 6 cyl coupe that needs bodywork. If you go for a 944 that cheap, it will probably be high mileage, need the timing belt/clutch done, or it would be an automatic.

If you like the idea of an old American car with a burbly V8, you really should check out 2nd gen Firebirds and Trans Ams. They are good looking cars set to compete with the mustangs (and to some extent the Camaro). They are also still cheap (bought mine running and driving two years ago as my first car for $2500) but are gaining rapidly in value. Parts are easy to find and really really cheap (I bought my motor and Trans for $220), there are always sellers on CL. Also, done up right they can look incredibly classy (1971 and 1972 Trans ams especially).

For no apparent reason I troll CL all the time keeping up with the markets for those cars. I also looked at those for my first cars.

You won't be able to afford a Vette unless it is a C4 or a basket case C3. C5s are still too expensive (unless they've been wrapped around a tree). The only "decent" mustangs you will be able to afford are first gen 6-cyl coupe project cars, fox bodies that are in worn shape, and 6-cly 90s era bubbly plastic cars. I'm just going to assume you don't care about the Mustang 2. Camaros you can easily find 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 00 cars (2nd - 4th gen cars) in your range in decent shape. Firebirds and Trans Ams in the same age range. GM f bodies are just cheap for some reason.

You can probably afford a decent base model 914, and a 924S... But those aren't as cool as a 944. Most 944s in your budget have probably been abused or not well maintained, it just happens because those cars are so cheap. BMWs, good luck finding a decency e30 now since the value has gone way up. E36s are still cheap... But they are harder to work on and more expensive to maintain

It depends on what your daily drive is like. And, subtle emphasis on daily. Traffic laws exist, speed limits exist. If you live in the flatlands of America, then a Mustang would probably be more fun due to its straight line acceleration advantage. If you live in an area with corners, or you intend to autocross, then the 944's chassis would be more desirable. If there is a mix of both, then the tie breaker should be this - look at the cost of replacement parts on the 944 - can you afford them? Because they are both older cars, so they will need a bit of wrenching - especially if you plan on hooning them.

My daily drive consists primarily of straight lines, some slight bends, inclines and declines here and there on roads that change from decent to okay to not very good(Michigan roads). I'm not sure if I'd AutoX one or the other. I'm willing to do the wrenching, I'm new to wrenching and figured one of them would be perfect to start with. I'm not sure if I could afford 944 parts and if I could, the car would be down for a good long while. Whichever is logically the cheapest and easiest to work on and with will be the one I pick.

And hooning would be no more than a spirited drive for them. Save the FoST for the intense hooning.

Mustang easy, then. Especially with the "Michigan roads" that are conductive of rust. As bad as I am at "turning a wrench", I just know I'd be drastically worse at completely removing rust spots and welding replacement sheet metal in to ensure the overall structural rigidity. Plus, if this is your first (or one of your first) cars, the Mustang is a much more fulfilling platform to try to build your Mustang, given the abundance in cheap parts.

Best of luck to you with whichever you choose. From what I have seen not personally owning either, they're both good cars - albeit with a few quirks.

If all works out like it does in my mind, it would be car #3 but my second car. I've already got a FoST as my daily, this would be nothing more than a summer car.

1. It looks like a cop car or one that would be bought by an old lady... The description is horrible so I can't really say more than that

2. Badass project car. It looks like it will need a ton of work though. They are throwing a carbed 5.0 into a car that should have an ecu and stuff. Kind of Frankenstein-y. It looks like the guy built it for the strip almost. Keep in mind paint will be stupid expensive (my paint job cost the painter 6k... I was quoted 3500).

3. "Looks good, ooh it's got decent paint *reads frame damage*. Nope nope nope nope nope" these 1st gen cars are rust buckets in the frame, trunk, and quarters.

4. Body work and paint gets really expensive really fast. I'd avoid it on such a car that really won't have much resale value.

5. Same reasons a 4 although I do like it a tad more than the last car too.

6. It's ugly looking and there could be a bit of rust in the fenders, but of it runs and drives well, it could be worse.

7. Do you really want to build and install an engine? Then get it painted and fix up the interior?

Btw the mustang 2 was the generation of mustang that came in following the 1973 model year and lasted until the fox body started production. They are generally regarded as the worst mustangs as they were ugly and massively underpowered.

It seems that Mustang is out of the question then. :(

Are there any other interesting American cars out there? A friend mentioned Fiero?

It is. Honestly I like 2 types of cars driver's cars (Cars that are simple fun and handle well.) and new 3 cylinder commuters. One of these is a 944 the other is a mirage or fiesta. I can only afford the 924s. It seems you want a drivers car so get a Fiero, a MR2, or a 944.

I want a casual driver's car that's fun and has the power and handles well.
